The signature question

A day at Zinnia

Twelve hours, start to finish. Scroll, and the light in this section moves with you — from the grey before seven, through the middle of the day, into the quiet of rest time and out the other side.

Opening and closing times are exact. The shape in between is what a day here looks like — it flexes with the children, and with yours. Ask us to walk you through your child’s own routine when you visit.

  1. Doors open

    Half past six, because early shifts and long drives are real. The gate is unlocked, the lights are on, and there is somewhere warm to sit while you hand over.

  2. Arrivals

    Coats onto hooks, bags into cubbies. Every child is greeted by name at the door, and whoever brought them tells us how the night went before they leave.

  3. Breakfast

    Everyone sits down together. It is unhurried on purpose — the first quiet twenty minutes of the day do more for a settled morning than anything else we do.

  4. Morning circle

    The whole day gets laid out loud: who is here, what the weather is doing, what is going to happen and in what order. Small children cope with a lot when they know what is coming.

  5. Outside

    Out into the garden — running, climbing, digging, negotiating over the same red spade. Most of what looks like play here is balance, coordination and taking turns.

  6. Lunch

    Hands washed, chairs pulled in. Older children help carry and pour, which is far messier than doing it for them and far more useful to them.

  7. Rest

    Curtains drawn, voices down, mats out. Not every child sleeps and none is made to — but everybody stops, and the whole building gets quiet for a while.

  8. Snack

    Slowly back into the day. Something to eat, something to drink, and a stretch of gentle, unstructured time before the afternoon properly starts.

  9. Making things

    Paint, paper, glue, music, dressing up, books read out loud. The afternoon is where most of the mess and most of the finished work comes from.

  10. Home time

    The first collections. You get told how the day actually went — what was eaten, what was slept, what was difficult and what was funny — not just that it was fine.

  11. Doors close

    Last pickup at half past six. Chairs up, floors swept, everything set out ready for tomorrow morning.

    Painting, drawing, crafts, and sensory play that develop fine motor skills and creativity.

  • Music & Movement

    1–4 years

    Singing, dancing, and rhythm activities that build coordination and self-expression.

  • Early Literacy

    2–5 years

    Storytelling, phonics, and language development through fun, engaging activities.

  • Outdoor Play

    All ages

    Safe outdoor adventures that promote physical health, nature awareness, and teamwork.

  • Social Skills

    2–5 years

    Group activities that teach sharing, empathy, and building lasting friendships.

We would rather publish four things that are exactly true than forty that sound good. Everything else, we will answer in person, in the room, while you watch how it actually works.

Six questions worth asking any daycare

    How many children is each adult responsible for?

    The single number that shapes everything else about your child's day.

  2. 02

    Who will actually be with my child, and how long have they been here?

    Low staff turnover matters more to a small child than any facility.

  3. 03

    What happens on a hard day — a bad separation, a bump, a fever?

    You are choosing how the bad days are handled, not the good ones.

  4. 04

    Who is allowed to collect, and how is that checked?

    Ask to be shown the process rather than told about it.

  5. 05

    What is the food, and who decides it?

    Two meals and a snack a day is most of what your child eats.

  6. 06

    What will you tell me at pickup?

    “Fine” is not a handover. You should expect specifics.
